Dreams have long been celebrated as sources of inspiration and analogues for artworks. In dreams we see that the world might be otherwise, that oppressive forces might be overcome, and that our wishes might be fulfilled. But the dreams that have driven the development of the modern world have resulted, to the contrary, in previously unimaginable nightmares. We live in a world where genocide has become commonplace, where the necessary conditions for life on earth are threatened by our own actions, and where there seems to be no limit to our exploitation of one another. Is it naïve now to dream--a disavowal of the conflicts that in fact define our condition? Or has the need to dream become more urgent than ever? For MISSION 17's 5th Annual Juried Exhibition titled Dream On!--with both the sarcasm and sincerity implied by the phrase--we invited artists to submit work in response to the imperative.

Fw: What's Wal-Mart so afraid of?

Repost from email newsletter:

What's Wal-Mart so afraid of? They're up to their old tricks, using scare tactics to intimidate employees against supporting pro-worker candidates. So what's got them backed into a corner? Four words: Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).

Watch Your New Job
EFCA would effectively enable workers to unionize and secure contracts without fear of being fired or reprisals from union-busting companies like Wal-Mart. It's a crucial bill for workers' rights. It could single-handedly restore the middle class. And it's the reason we've partnered with American Rights at Work to bring you our latest video.

Watch the video "Your New Job"

Send this video to every person who cares about fairness and wants a middle class in America, and get them to sign the petition to ensure that EFCA passes. And while you're at it, let your friends know about Meet the Bloggers because today at 1pm ET/10am PT, our special guest SEIU President Andy Stern will be discussing the importance of EFCA with bloggers Baratunde Thurston (JackandJillPolitics.com) and Michael Whitney (American Rights at Work).

Watch Andy Stern live on Meet the Bloggers today at 1pm ET.

Check out the articles below on EFCA, get informed, and join us on the show's live blog at 1pm ET/10 am PT, when we'll stand up to Wal-Mart, and stand up for workers' rights.

Yours,
Robert Greenwald, Paris Marron, Leighton Woodhouse
and the Brave New team

REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications are requested from artists and/or artist teams interested in creating a
site specific public artwork for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs,
Science and Engineering Building.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTAL: September 26, 2008
TOTAL ART BUDGET: $90,000
NAME OF INSTITUION: University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
Science and Engineering Building
PROJECT SUMMARY
The lobby of the Science and Engineering Building is a spectacular three floor entry
atrium. The Art Selection Committee requests that the artwork utilize this entry
location which will house a Foucault pendulum (purchased separately by the
University). The Committee is looking for art that is diverse in media and can be
integrated into this space. The artwork should engage in a dialogue with the
pendulum as well as articulate the nature, aspects, or mysteries of the scientific
disciplines located in the building. Lighting is important on this campus and should
be considered as an element of this artwork. This project will need to be fast tracked
once awarded to the artist, so please do not apply unless you could complete the
project in the spring of 2009.
MISSION
“The Colorado Springs campus of the University of Colorado shall be a
comprehensive baccalaureate university with selective admission standards. The
Colorado Springs campus shall offer liberal arts and sciences, business,
engineering, health sciences, and teacher preparation undergraduate degree
programs, and a selected number of master’s and doctoral degree programs."
VISION: The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will provide unsurpassed,
student-centered teaching and learning, and outstanding research and creative work
that serve our community, state, and nation, and result in our recognition as the
premier comprehensive, regional research university in the United States
HISTORY
The University of Colorado dates back to the pioneer days of Colorado and has
grown dramatically since those early days. It is now a system with three distinct
institutions: CU-Boulder, CU-Colorado Springs, and CU-Denver and Health
Sciences Center. In 1974 the Board of Regents officially established the CU System
to be led by a President and each institution led by a Chancellor.
The Colorado Springs campus began in the 1920s as an extension center for the
Boulder campus. By the 1960s the extension center had grown to more than 1,200
students. A gift of the land and buildings of the old Cragmor Sanatorium provided a
permanent site for the campus, and in 1965 the extension center became the
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Since then, numerous buildings have
been added, including residence halls.
The Colorado Springs campus distinguishes itself in space and electronics research,
which creates a mutually supportive relationship with some of the local area’s
primary industries. The American Association of State Colleges and Universities
named UCCS as one of two national leaders in community engagement efforts.
UCCS is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing
universities in the nation.
COMMUNITY INFORMATION
The City of Colorado Springs is the second most populous city in the state of
Colorado with a population approaching 400,000. Colorado Springs is located 63
miles south of Denver at an elevation of 6,035 feet. The city is situated near the
base of one of the most famous American mountains, Pikes Peak, at the eastern
edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains.
Colorado Springs amenities include parks, bike trails, open-area spaces, business
and commerce, museums, theatres and other entertainment. It was first established
as a posh resort community and the tourist industry has remained strong and offers
many activities and attractions. In 2006, Money magazine ranked Colorado Springs
the best place to live in the big city category, which includes cities with 300,000 or
more people.
DESCRIPTION
The Science and Engineering Building at the University of Colorado at Colorado
Springs brings together the departments of biology, physics, and mechanical and
aerospace engineering as well as the National Institute for Science, Space and
Security Centers and the CU Institute for Bioenergetics into a single facility. The joint
research of these various groups will be supported in flexible research space that is
intended to encourage additional inter-disciplinary opportunities. The 156,000 gross
square feet complex will significantly expand the current science and engineering
capabilities and will include innovative classrooms, teaching labs, research labs for
science and engineering and computer technology, as well as faculty and staff
offices. It will be the largest building on the UCCS campus and will be LEED Silver
certified.
The new Science and Engineering Building will have an integrated K-12 outreach
theme featuring a welcoming facility for secondary school children who will have
opportunities to interact with engineering and science experiments. The building will
also encourage ‘living’ tours of science, invention and discovery. Interactive centers,
called ‘Imagination Stations’, will allow K-12 students to learn about the research
and teachings in the building. Interactive programs will be derived from the work of
the UCCS students in the Bachelor of Innovation™ Game Design and Development
degree.
BUDGET
$90,000 is available for all related expenses of this Public Art commission including
artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, etc.
The pendulum will be purchased separately by the University, but the artist may
enhance it as they see fit. There are two elements that the artist will have to
address in their design. One is an area of the floor below the pendulum that has
been left unfinished and the other will be a barrier to surround the swing of the
pendulum.
COMMITTEE STATEMENT ON THE ART
The lobby of the Science and Engineering Building is a spectacular three floor entry
atrium. The Art Selection Committee requests that the artwork utilize this entry
location which will house a Foucault pendulum (purchased separately by the
University). The Committee is looking for art that is diverse in media and can be
integrated into this space. The artwork should engage in a dialogue with the

disciplines located in the building. Lighting is important on this campus and should
be considered as an element of this artwork. This project will need to be fast tracked
once awarded to the artist, so please do not apply unless you could complete the
project in the spring of 2009.
Foucault pendulum
The Foucault pendulum, named after the French physicist Leon Foucault, was
conceived as an experiment to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. The first public
demonstration took place in 1851; at that time it was widely known that the earth
rotated, but Foucault’s pendulum provided the first dynamic proof in an easy-to-see
experiment. Today Foucault pendulums are located in many science museums,
planetariums and educational facilities and often artwork is integrated with these
pendulums.
COLORADO ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM
In 1977, the Colorado General Assembly passed the Art in Public Places Act
requiring that 1% of the construction costs of new or renovated state-owned
buildings be used to acquire works of art for permanent installation at the project
site. The Colorado Council on the Arts (CCA) is responsible for implementation of
the law. Upon installation, all purchased or commissioned works of art become the
property of the State and form the state art collection, developed and administered
by the CCA. The AIPP program has successfully commissioned or purchased over
400 works of art for the enhancement of state buildings and the enjoyment of the
citizens of Colorado.
By uniting artists, architecture and the host community, the Art in Public Places
Program (AIPP) acts as a formal mechanism for integrating the art experience into the
built environment and civic spaces. The CCA, in conjunction with the client agency,
appoints a different art selection committee for each project. Each committee has at
least the following members: the project architect, an agency representative, a
building tenant, a member of the host community, an artist, a member of the board of
the CCA and one member each from the State Senate and the House of
Representatives. The Program Administrator of the AIPP facilitates the process and
the CCA board reviews selection committee recommendations for final approval.
ELIGIBILITY
The Colorado Council on the Arts is committed to ensuring the broadest possible
impact of its limited resources. The Program is open to all artists regardless of race,
color, creed, gender, gender variance, national origin, age, religion, marital status,
political opinion or affiliation, or mental or physical handicap although certain
projects may be limited or give preference to those residing in Colorado. This call is
open to all U.S. artists. An artist with an existing public art contract with the Colorado
Council on the Arts is not eligible to accept another Art in Public Places project until
the current contract is substantially complete.

Public Art Opp's and other collaborations

The latest installment of public art opportunities; please pay special attention to the administrator's note regarding yelp. I believe it is a very good idea for someone who is motivated and has a few moments in their day to begin compiling this data.

Happy reading:

Short note from the administrator

Dear Artists:

As long as I have been in the field of public art, artists have requested some sort of centralized information resource where they can learn about fabricators, installers and other related vendors. As a government agency, the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture (and all other government agencies as far as I know) is prohibited from providing any type of information that can be perceived as a recommendation or preferential treatment to a vendor. This is the reason why our agency has never taken on the task of providing this centralized information resource that you’ve all been asking for. However, I believe I may have discovered a possible solution.

Maybe some of you are already familiar with www.yelp.com . This a website which is free for readers and users and it features user reviews of all different types of services. For example, anyone can go onto this site and write a review about their local drycleaner or taco shop. Why not add your reviews about mosaic installers or foundries? It’s extremely stable and user-friendly. You can review vendors anywhere in the country, which helps artists who work in areas where they’re not familiar with the local businesses. All it would take for www.yelp.com to support the artist community is a few enterprising artists who start entering reviews and information about the vendors they use. If someone were to take this on and really develop a solid set of “lists”, gather “friends” and write reviews, I would be able to direct artists who ask me for vendor referrals to your Yelp profile and the power of the artist community would grow exponentially.

If anyone noticed the hypocrisy of my recommendation for www.yelp.com , please forgive me. I’ve used Angie’s List (which isn’t free), and Citysearch and a bunch of other user-review sites, and none are as comprehensive, wide-reaching or as well-tailored for what artists want as Yelp, in my opinion. However, if you know of something better, by all means, share.

If you take this on, please let me know how I can help. Dana

East Lancaster Corridor Master Plan, Fort Worth, TX

East Lancaster Avenue extends from Interstate 35 W, just east of downtown Fort Worth, out to Loop 820 and beyond to the Historic Handley Village. Known locally as the “Old Dallas Highway”, the corridor features Mid-20th Century commercial architecture and some wide, grassy medians with large oak trees. The Fort Worth Art Commission has approved an approach that considers the whole of the East Lancaster Corridor, seeking to stitch various sites together so public art projects - both current and future - relate to one another conceptually or visually while reflecting the unique qualities of the neighborhoods in which they reside. In addition, conceptual design work for the two locations for which funding is currently available is desired. Some nodes that the East Lancaster Corridor Master Plan shall address include but are not limited to:

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Artist/Planner or Public Art Consultant Team (consisting of at least one public art consultant and one artist) with extensive urban corridor public art planning experience, outstanding community facilitation skills, and experience working with other artists. ***PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY, Gresham, Oregon***

CENTER FOR THE ARTS , GRESHAM, OREGON

DESCRIPTION
The Regional Arts & Culture Council in Portland, Oregon, invites artists/teams residing in the United States to submit qualifications to create multiple freestanding sculptures for the new Center for the Arts Community Plaza in Gresham, Oregon.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists/teams residing in the United States.

PROJECT BUDGET: The art budget is $175,000 including all related costs for design, fabrication and installation.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Project Overview

Gresham, Oregon, has grown from a sleepy farming and lumber village founded in 1905 to Oregon’s fourth largest city. With record population growth in the past decade, Gresham has outgrown the shadow of Portland and is evolving from a commuter town to a bustling, multicultural community seeking a distinct identity of its own. "Let's make Gresham a destination for the arts in the 21st century. The Center for the Arts can be the nucleus around which the arts can foster livability for generations to come…a showplace for learning, performing and sharing the joy the arts bring to all of us." -- Charles Becker, Former Mayor, City of Gresham

The long term goal for the Gresham Center for the Arts is for it to encompass four distinct elements: (1) the Plaza which is the focus of the first phase of the project and will be flanked by large open lawn areas until the buildings are constructed over the next 3 to 10 years; (2) an Events Center, a multi-purpose building with a first-floor conference center/community meeting place and second-floor black box theater space; (3) a Proscenium Theater for community performing arts events as well as national touring acts such as Broadway shows, comedy, music, magic and dance; (4) the Festival Street on NE 3rd Street, which runs along the north edge of the site, and will be redesigned to allow the plaza to flow out into the right-of-way. The plaza will be under construction in September 2008 with a completion date of August 2009.

The Art Committee is seeking one artist/team to create multiple artworks for the north end of the plaza that are inventive and innovative interpretations of the arts. Artists who work in any durable sculpture media will be considered. Power, water and drainage will be provided to the location of the art. The use of these utilities is at the discretion of the selected artist and should not be viewed as an expectation or requirement.

How to Apply

All materials must be submitted online, via CaFÉ™. For complete details, download the Call for Artist s from www.racc.org or go to www.callforentry.org , register a username and password, navigate to “Apply to Calls” and search for “Gresham Center for the Arts: Portland, Oregon.”

CITY OF SACRAMENTO
SACRAMENTO METROPOLITAN ARTS COMMISSION
ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM
REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS FOR A PRE-QUALIFIED ARTIST DATABASE
NOTE: APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th
The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC) invites artists and artist teams to submit qualifications for potential inclusion in a pre-qualified artist database for upcoming public art opportunities at the Sacramento International Airport. The “Airport Art Program” will provide opportunities for artists to create permanently installed artwork at various sites throughout the Airport over the next four years.
A selection panel comprised of members of SMAC, the Art in Public Places Committee, arts professionals and community representatives will review applications and establish a pool of qualified artists working in a variety of media. Media appropriate to the Airport Art Program includes sculpture, ceramic, mosaics, art glass, multi-media, artist-designed lighting elements, or any other durable materials suitable for long-term exposure in an airport environment.

Once the database is established, individual selection panels will be convened to review artists’ portfolios for one or more projects or project sites. The composition of the selection panels may vary, but will typically include members of the SMAC, the Sacramento Airport Authority, Airport employees, community representatives and arts professionals.
Artists included in the database will be considered for various art sites and may be selected to participate in a design competition for those sites based on the scale, style and media of their past work and its relationship to the site for which artwork is to be commissioned. Artists selected for the pre-qualified pool will be notified prior to being placed under consideration for specific projects or project sites.

If awarded a commission, artists will be required to attend periodic meetings in Sacramento, present concept proposals to SMAC and its subcommittees, and attend community meetings as required. Selected artists or artist teams will be responsible for overseeing the fabrication, delivery and installation of the commissioned artwork and for working cooperatively with the project architects, design-build team and SMAC and Airport staff and consultants.
Project Background
On March 25, 2008, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, in compliance with the City’s Public Art Ordinance, approved an allocation of $5 million for the acquisition of permanent artwork for the planned Terminal B Modernization Program at the Sacramento International Airport. Designed by Corgan Associates, the architectural design includes a three-level landside terminal with sections of curved roof that reach out from a central core. The glass-clad walls allow light to filter throughout the building while exterior sunscreens provide shading from the summer sun. An automated "people mover" tram will run from the landside building to airside passenger concourse building. The design of the airside terminal echoes the curved roof and tilted glass walls of the landside building.
Airport Art Sites
Opportunities for artwork will vary from monumental to intimately scaled, and from whimsical pieces to those that are more serious and contemplative. The commissioned artwork may address the architectural scale of the building or may be experienced on a more intimate and personal level.
Potential sites for artwork include the central hall of the landside building, including the ticket counter lobby and the circulation area, the passenger concourse and gate rooms, domestic and international baggage claim areas, transfer station connections, and the Airport entryway. Other sites and art opportunities may be identified as the program evolves. All artists selected for the art program will be encouraged to create unique, innovative artwork that reflects Sacramento’s stature as the State Capital and as a thriving center for government activity, cultural tourism and trade. All artwork commissioned for the Airport must respond creatively to the site, architecture, and function of the Airport facilities.
Art Budgets
It is anticipated that individual public art project budgets will range from $100,000 to one million dollars.
Eligibility Requirements
Professional artists or artist teams residing in the United States with experience in the design, fabrication, and installation of public artwork are eligible to apply to the pre-qualified artist pool. Artists from Amador, Butte, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin,
Solano, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba counties are encouraged to apply.

Artist Selection Criteria
Artists will be selected for inclusion in the pre-qualified artist database based on the following criteria:
Innovation, creativity and quality of craftsmanship in previous projects.
Ability to and interest in creating artwork that is unique to the Airport Art Program and which is of a museum-quality aesthetic standard.
Appropriateness of artwork media and scale relative to the Airport Art Program.
Demonstrated proficiency and technical knowledge of the materials and techniques in the artist’s chosen medium.
Experience and success in creating public artwork in collaboration or cooperation with architectural design teams and under the auspices of a public agency.
Assessed ability to design, fabricate and install artwork within a relatively short timeline.
Application Procedures
Applicants must submit the following information:
1. A completed application form. (2 copies).
2. A professional résumé, four pages maximum (2 copies). Artist teams must submit resumes for each team member.
3. A statement that describes your general approach to art making and to addressing the issues and concerns of public art in particular. (2 copies).
4. Ten (10) images of past work on a PC Compatible CD Rom. (As an added precaution, please review your images on a PC prior to submitting your application). Art Show - Clara Street Projects

Hey all, Opening next friday, a sort of grassroots thing that I am involved in. Inserted the press release below:

“Clara Street Projects” Transforms Auto Garage into Alternative Gallery Space 170 Clara Street, San Francisco
August 8 – October 3, 2008

Opening Receptions for “Clara Street Projects: An Exhibition in Three Parts”
Part I: Transformations-- Friday, August 8, 6-8 pm
Part II: Site and Situation-- Thursday, August 28, 6-8 pm
Part III: Negotiations-- Thursday, September 18, 6-8 pm

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 29, 2008—“Clara Street Projects”, a group of Bay Area artists, has repurposed a former auto mechanic’s garage in the South of Market area of San Francisco to stage a series of three two-week visual arts exhibitions running from August 8 through October 3, 2008.

The temporary exhibition space on Clara Street will only exist for these three shows. The owner of the building has generously donated the space to the collective while awaiting city approval for his renovation plans. The show’s organizers, Barry Beach, Kelly Falzone, and Joshua Keller, have collaborated with exhibiting artists to repurpose the space and stage the shows.

This endeavor was inspired in part by the “Ways and Means” group show that took place in April of 2008 in which 24 emerging artists repurposed a donated 1800 square foot vacant office space on Howard Street, creating an alternative gallery setting specifically designed to showcase their work.

“Clara Street Projects: An Exhibition in Three Parts” features thirty-one Bay Artists utilizing a wide range of media, processes and materials. “Part I: Transformations” features work addressing the intersections of the natural and built environments and will run from August 8 through 22. “Part II: Site and Situation” addresses the idea of art as cognitive remnant and will be up August 28 through September 12. “Part III: Negotiations” will explore the interplay between individuals and their surroundings September 18 through October 3.

“Clara Street Projects” is located at 170 Clara Street, one-half block north of Harrison Street between 5th and 6th Streets in SOMA. Gallery hours are 12-6pm Tuesday through Saturday. Limited street parking is available. Garage parking is available nearby at San Francisco Center (5th Street) and at the Moscone Center (4th Street).

Chapel Hill, NC - Chapel Hill Office of Public Art Call to Artists: Greenways Trail System
Project Summary
ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists and artist teams in NC, SC, VA, GA, and TN. Artists and teams may specialize in multiple disciplines and media. North Carolina artists are encouraged to apply.
BUDGET: at least $50,000.
DESCRIPTION: The Town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina seeks qualifications from artists and/or artist teams to (1) engage the community in a dialog about itself, explore the Town’s Greenways Trail System, and recognize public art opportunities in the Greenways System during a seven to ten-day residency, (2) design and present for review one or more prototype public art feature(s) for the Greenways, and (3) fabricate the final public art prototype(s) to be installed on the Morgan Creek, Dry Creek or Bolin Creek segments of the Trail System.
Project Overview
Chapel Hill’s Greenways form an extensive trail network throughout the Town and currently include approximately 4.5 miles of paved trail and 7.6 miles of natural surface trail. The Town’s 2006 Greenways Master Plan identifies over 28 miles of potential trails to be built within the Town. Once finished, the system will act as both a recreation and transportation network that will link most areas of Town. Three paved trail extensions are currently in various phases of development: Morgan Creek Trail, Bolin Creek Trail, and Dry Creek Trail. In accordance with the Town’s Percent for Art Ordinance, one percent of the budget for these three trail extensions (estimated to be a total of $50,000) will fund this public art project. The use of construction credits and the procurement of additional funds are also possible. This is a three phase project.
During Phase One of this project the selected artist(s) will undertake a seven to ten-day residency in Chapel Hill consisting of research, greenway tours, meetings and public events to be designed by the selected artist(s) in conjunction with Town public art staff. Participating stakeholders may include the Greenways and Public Arts commissions, the Parks and Recreation Department and other Town divisions, and relevant community and neighborhood organizations. The selected artist(s) may also have the opportunity to work with the landscape design firms of, Lappas and Havener, and Coulter, Jewel and Thames. The residency will conclude with the public presentation of findings and opportunities to the Public Art Review Committee and Chapel Hill Town Council. This ten-day residency will occur during October/November of 2008. The selected artist or team will be compensated $10,000 for completion of this phase, inclusive of travel and lodging.
In Phase Two the selected artist(s) will develop concept designs of prototype public art features for review by the Public Art Review Committee, the community, and Town Council. Concepts may range from integrated design elements (paving pattern design, pedestrian bridge features): trail markers, sign posts or other information delivery systems; to sculptural elements, landscape features, or artistic amenities (seating, bike racks), or something else entirely. Selected artist(s) will be compensated $15,000 for completion of this phase, inclusive of travel and lodging.
In Phase Three the selected artist(s) will develop construction level design documents, work with town staff to develop a process by which the town, in an on-going manner, could fabricate additions of the prototype, fabricate the final prototype(s) and install, site, or demonstrate the use of the prototype(s) on at least one of the following segments of the Trail System: Morgan Creek, Dry Creek and/or Bolin Creek. The final prototype(s) design must be able to be replicated by the Town throughout the Greenways Trail System at a cost ranging from $ $250- $2,500 per unit and in accordance with submitted designs. Selected artist(s) will be compensated at least $25,000 for completion of this phase, inclusive of design drawings, prototype(s) fabrication, travel and lodging.
The complete text of the 2006 Greenways Master Plan may be accessed at: http://townhall.townofchapelhill.org/parks_&_rec/facilities_greenways_&_parks/greenways/plans/greenways_master_plan/ . cheers,

The City of Norfolk, Virginia is excited to announce two design projects

for Town Point Park, the City’s seven-acre Festival Park

at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay on the water’s edge of the Elizabeth River.

Water Feature - The City of Norfolk seeks to commission an artist to design a signature water feature that speaks specifically and uniquely about the park, the Elizabeth River and Norfolk. The artwork will be a show piece to celebrate the entrance to Town Point Park and act as a welcoming gateway to the waterfront. This is a design project, no actual fabrication or construction is part of this budget. It is anticipated that the Artist will participate in the fabrication and installation of the artwork under a separate budget and another contract. Project funds for this site-specific design project are $60,000. Deadline for submissions is August 19, 2008.

Perimeter - The City of Norfolk seeks to commission an artist to design a perimeter that clearly delineates the street edge as a fence between Town Point Park on Waterside Drive and Downtown Norfolk. The artwork will serve to control pedestrian and vehicle traffic while maintaining the visual connection to the water. There are public walkways on both sides and the design will be an important edge that identifies the Park. Artists are encouraged to think beyond the idea of a fence. This is a design project, no actual fabrication or construction is part of this budget. It is anticipated that the Artist will participate in the fabrication and installation of the artwork under a separate budget and another contract. Project funds for this site-specific design project are $20,000. Deadline for submissions is August 19, 2008.

Project descriptions and details for applying may be found at http://www.norfolk.gov/Purchasing/artwork_rfp.asp

Petaluma Fire Station, Petaluma, CA

Deadline: August 1, 2008

Budget: $70,000-$90,000

The City of Petaluma and the Petaluma Public Art Committee (PPAC) are soliciting qualifications for a new public art piece that will be located on the site of the new Petaluma Fire Station located in downtown Petaluma. This is a highly visible project and offers the opportunity for the artist’s work to be integrated into a new city building. The subject site is located at 307 Petaluma Boulevard South, and will be highly visible to all drivers and pedestrians as they approach Petaluma’s Historical Downtown. The primary area of focus for the new art is the proposed 8 foot high by 40 foot long concrete masonry unit (CMU) wall located at the west side of the property that runs all the way up to the property line at Petaluma Blvd. The wall will likely be finished with a brick face to match the Fire Station building façade. Most likely there will be a cap detail to the wall and landscape planting in front. There is interest in the idea that the wall’s art reflect the history and/or story of Petaluma and/or the Petaluma Fire Department.

Media Arts Project

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, FL

Deadline: September 19, 2008

Budget: for each video, $5000

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is designated A Place for People, and facilitates the belief that a modern airport serving millions can still be visually appealing and stimulating to the senses. From its 9,000 ft. main runway, non-stop service is provided to South America, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and more than 55 U.S. cities. The facility handles 741 air carrier flights daily carrying a total average of 66,914 passengers a day. The airport maintains a special relationship with Port Everglades, the second largest cruise terminal in the world, located just eight minutes away by shuttle bus. The airport has four terminals and several multi-level parking garages.

Artwork Scope:

Original video artworks, no longer than ten (10) minutes in length and created within the last two years will be considered. The works should be appropriate for a diverse audience of varying ages and interests. Artists must also be sensitive to issues that the airport has regarding safety, security, and air travel. Artworks will be evaluated based on excellence, originality, creativity, clarity of idea, appropriateness to the site, and quality of sound and image. The number of entries per artist is limited to two (2). Single channel and double channel video works may be commissioned. The video artworks, which will form part of the Airport’s public art video collection, will be on display 24 hours a day on plasma screens facing gate waiting areas and restaurants of Concourse B in Terminal 1. Due to the fast paced and often noisy environment of the Airport, the videos must not be dependent on a sound component. Video artwork will be displayed on a temporary basis.
