SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 29, 2008—“Clara Street Projects”, a group of Bay Area artists, has repurposed a former auto mechanic’s garage in the South of Market area of San Francisco to stage a series of three two-week visual arts exhibitions running from August 8 through October 3, 2008.

The temporary exhibition space on Clara Street will only exist for these three shows. The owner of the building has generously donated the space to the collective while awaiting city approval for his renovation plans. The show’s organizers, Barry Beach, Kelly Falzone, and Joshua Keller, have collaborated with exhibiting artists to repurpose the space and stage the shows.

This endeavor was inspired in part by the “Ways and Means” group show that took place in April of 2008 in which 24 emerging artists repurposed a donated 1800 square foot vacant office space on Howard Street, creating an alternative gallery setting specifically designed to showcase their work.

“Clara Street Projects: An Exhibition in Three Parts” features thirty-one Bay Artists utilizing a wide range of media, processes and materials. “Part I: Transformations” features work addressing the intersections of the natural and built environments and will run from August 8 through 22. “Part II: Site and Situation” addresses the idea of art as cognitive remnant and will be up August 28 through September 12. “Part III: Negotiations” will explore the interplay between individuals and their surroundings September 18 through October 3.

“Clara Street Projects” is located at 170 Clara Street, one-half block north of Harrison Street between 5th and 6th Streets in SOMA. Gallery hours are 12-6pm Tuesday through Saturday. Limited street parking is available. Garage parking is available nearby at San Francisco Center (5th Street) and at the Moscone Center (4th Street).
